English Language Literacy
If your child communicates in a language other than English at home, he or she may be eligible for English language support. This support is made possible through State and Federal funding (Title III, Section 41 Bilingual Grant, among others) and is backed by the United States Office of Civil Rights and the Department of Justice. It is your student's legal right of equal access to receive their education. Enrollment in a language support program is not considered Special Education and names are not reported to the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The law requires us to test your child’s English language proficiency to determine eligibility. The State of Michigan uses nationally recognized assessments called the WIDA Screener and WIDA ACCESS Placement Test for ELLs 2.0. For more information regarding the assessments, visit www.wida.us.
As a licensed and certified English Language Literacy Teacher, I have the ability to tailor a program to support your child's individual needs. Participation in our district's English Language Literacy (ELL) Program is extremely beneficial because it will help to increase your child’s ability to acquire and develop the communication skills necessary for meeting all grade-level content expectations. If eligible, we highly recommend that your child participate.
The goals of the ELL program are for students to become fully proficient in English, to meet grade-level content expectations and to master school district/state standards for academic achievement as rapidly as possible. We reassess the students each spring to see if he or she meets the exit criteria, which is the achievement of at least 4.0 out of 6.0 in reading and writing and a score of at least 4.5 overall on the WIDA assessment in addition to being at or above grade level on the district's reading assessment for the student's grade level. As mentioned, we highly recommend that your child participate in and receive the benefits from our ELL program, however you have the right to decline your child’s participation in or ‘opt your child out’ of the program or additional services and/or accommodations.
